The Kalimba (or Karimba)is an instrument originally from Africa that is usually played as an accompaniment to vocals, though it can be played on its own, too. It is very easy to play by plucking the keys with both thumbs. It is made of a gourd covered by a piece of wood with the key assembly attached.

(More customer reviews)I bought this thumb piano as a gift and had it shipped to me. I am a musician and so is she. I have a thumb piano I play frequently and was so disappointed with this that I am sending it back. It cannot be tuned, the tongs are crooked and cannot be played easily - if they even can be.
It would make a pretty decoration but it is not an instrument.

This traditional African instrument is a Kalimba or Finger Piano. It is handmade in Kenya, East Africa. All sizes vary depending on the scraps of wood used but the approximate size is 6 by 3.5 by 1.5 inches. The design on the hollow box will vary slightly as each is unique. These are crafted around the Kenya / Tanzania border; the metal tines are salvaged from scrap metal.

(More customer reviews)I don't know how this instrument sounds as I was sent a cheaper version instead of this one which I ordered for just under $19.00. The one I received was nice enough, but I was disappointed. Be careful to check that they are sending you the correct instrument when you get to check out and that the price isn't around $13.00. Amazon didn't bother to let me know they were making a substitution.
