Thumb Piano, Large Review

Thumb Piano, Large

I've been playing the Hugh Tracey Kalimba for many years.
I bought a Mid East Kalimba from eBay.
It was advertised as a Hugh Tracey Kalimba and came
in an old Hugh Tracey box. I thought I had gotten a good deal.
In the picture it looks exactly the same.
The first thing I noticed different was the paint on the tines.
It was a more of a translucent color. I thought it had been
repainted (and kind of a sloppy job at that).
The next thing I noticed, as soon as I took it out the box
was that it was a much heavier wood. It did not have the light
feel of the Hugh Tracey models which are made from an exotic,
resonant Kiaat wood. This thing was thick.
It looked very pretty though.
The big disappointment came when I started to play the instrument.
First off, it was out of tune. I had a rough time trying to tune
this beast. With the Hugh Tracey models, I just wiggle the tines
side to side or use a coin to push the tines.
The tines don't move easily on this Mid East Beast... Damn!
Unless you know what you are doing, you won't be
able to get this thing in tune. It's very difficult.
After fighting with it for almost an hour, I finally got it tuned.
The sound is OK but kind of tinny (if that's a word).
It doesn't have the full, deeper sound of the Hugh Tracey.
It's probably because the tines are thicker.
It doesn't have the mellow tamber nor maintain the sustain.
I also notice the edges of the tines are not smooth.
It's a little rough on your thumbnails.
You probably should sand them down some to smooth it out.
All in all, it looks pretty but not much fun to play.
I would never buy another one
(and wish I could get my money back).
You'd be much better off with a Hugh Tracey Model.
They come tuned, don't scratch your thumbnails
and give you a much fuller, more mellow sound.

Kalimba. Origin Country: Pakistan. 2.1 lbs. Made by Mid-East.
Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch.

Barcelona Full-Size 30 Key Piano Styled Accordion with Free Locking Case - Black Review

Barcelona Full-Size 30 Key Piano Styled Accordion with Free Locking Case - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, let me be very clear - if you're serious about playing the accordion and you know you'll be doing it for a long time, skip this instrument. On the other hand, if you're a beginning student and you're not sure whether it's going to become a regular part of your life, this accordion is perfect for you.
The Pros:
-Decent-sized Keyboard (not the largest, but also not so small as to be a handicap early on)
-32 Bass Buttons - It's a far cry from the number of bass buttons on most "professional" accordions, but a lot of more expensive student models come with just 12. This gives you a bit more to work with
-Affordable - It's tough to find a new accordion for less
-Comes with a case and straps. The case is pretty wimpy, but it WILL keep the dust off. If you're on a tight budget, the inclusion of these extras is great.
-The accordion smells a little bit like a skating rink. You might consider this a con, but I don't mind the small dose of childhood nostalgia every time I practice.
The Cons:
-This is not the smoothest accordion you'll ever find. It works, and it sounds okay, but it's nowhere near professional quality in feel and sound.
-The free straps are functional, but not super comfortable for long practices. If you can spare another $30, I would highly recommend getting the Hohner padded straps sold elsewhere on Amazon. I'm very glad that I did.
-You will eventually need to upgrade if you find that you love the accordion. On the bright side, you can probably sell this thing on Craigslist for at least 1/2 to 2/3rds of what you paid for it.
In summary, this is a great budget accordion for someone who wants to test the waters and see if the accordion is really for them. If you're very serious about the accordion, though, get something better. As much as I like mine, I'm already shopping for a nice Hohner or something similar to replace it. I'm glad I didn't drop $1000+ on a nice one from the beginning, though.

Suzuki Cello School Volume 1 - Piano Accompaniment - Book Review

Suzuki Cello School Volume 1 - Piano Accompaniment - Book
Average Reviews:

Bought this book for my daughter- age 10. She likes it, but likes Volume 2 better. It has interesting songs, but seemed too simple for her as she had a piano background. Preferred Volume 2 and thinks you should go straight to #2 if you already have a background in music.

Kalimba Thumb Piano, Coconut Shell, 7 Keys Review

Kalimba Thumb Piano, Coconut Shell, 7 Keys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The previous reviewer is right. I've made my own kalimbas or thumb pianos from things around the house - they aren't that hard to make. But this is a good price for a kalimba with a good sound and simple number of keys.
The rewards from playing this instrument are phenomenal when just played with for an hour or two. It seems like it would be a waste of time, but it isn't. You'd be amazed at how fast an hour goes by while plucking the keys in singles and in pairs. The angels will indeed sing you into a much more relaxed and contemplative mood.
Whether you play in the morning to set you at ease before going to work, or play before bed time to set you in the right mood for dreaming, this "toy" is a very powerful mood altering drug. Use it in excess, safely, knowing that the only harm it might do you is sore thumbs and the occasional cracked thumbnail. The benefits are endless.
Eight keys is a minimum. More is better. But any number of 8 or more keys should give you at least one scale to play with.
Aim for a medium pluck - not too hard, and not too soft. Hard makes for harsh noise, but medium plucking will not wear you out and will produce a nice sound. Play the keys beside each other together for variety, or in quick succession as your thumbnail falls off one then the other. It's a fun instrument to experiment with. Have fun getting high on sound and your imagination.

Williams Matching Padded Piano Bench for Symphony Digital Piano Review

Williams Matching Padded Piano Bench for Symphony Digital Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bench does not have storage underneath like most other piano benches. There is absolutely no information available about this feature in the item description. I called the merchant to ask, and even tried the manufacturer's website, but nobody had the answer. I had to order it just hoping that storage was included. Of course, when the bench arrived, I was disappointed to see that it had no storage underneath.

Thickly padded bench provides hours of comfort for practicing or performing. Although designed by Williams to match their Symphony digital piano (not recommended for their Symphony Elite), its attractive, dark woodgrain finish complements the look of most any piano.Note: based on the lighting in the room, the woodgrain finish of this piano bench can range from being perceived as nearly black to an almost brown coloration.
