Quik-Lok BX-14 Padded Keyboard Bench Review

Quik-Lok BX-14 Padded Keyboard Bench
Average Reviews:

It's really hard to tell the quality and size of the benches seen online from a simple picture and the numbers quoted (occasionally) in profiles. That being said, this is the second bench I've bought online, the first being proportioned for Golem from LOTR.
This bench is a high quality product. It has a very thick pad for comfort and has an adjustable range set for an averaged sized person which provides for proper posture when playing a standard sized keyboard or piano. Other products may be a little cheaper...but they're also undersized to save on material costs....and they make you play the piano in a very uncomfortable position. Spend a little extra and buy a bench like this, so you'll enjoy your time playing!

Akai Pro MPK61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller Review

Akai Pro MPK61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen only two reviews on the MPK61 having looked all over the net. Both complained of the feel of the keyboard. I'll get to that shortly.
I bought mine based on reviews of the MPK49. I also bought an On-Stage stand for it and a Behringer expression pedal. It was a quick setup - but I found almost immediately that two adjacent notes were not playing - unless I really hit them hard. So it got RMAed - no problem - the next unit was fine.
Pros:
The controls and pads were much bigger than I thought they would be - I just hadn't picked up on the size from the photo. So they are large and very smooth.
The pitch bend and mod wheels are well built (and lit up!). It doesn't look like the pitch bend would ever bias like some controllers.
The unit can run on USB power only. For all the lights on this thing you wonder how 500 milliamps manages it all. If a USB connection is not established the MPK will send controls out the MIDI connector - yet still run from USB power (say your computer is in standby but still provides USB power - actually I'm passing through a USB hub). This is useful if you just have a sound module connected to it.
If USB is established, the MIDI in connectors will pass another controller or keyboard to the computer. This keyboard actually establishes three USB MIDI connections with your computer.
Aftertouch works well.
Generally you have a lot of control over sensitivity of the keys and pads. So you can adjust things the way you like. Except....
Cons:
The guy was right about the feel of the keyboard. To be more specific - it is supposed to be a semi-weighted keyboard but the spring in the keys requires every bit of force (or more) than a fully weighted keyboard. The spring fights your fingers down and up as well. But worse, the keys are about an inch shorter than they should be - so hitting a black key requires a lot of force if you're towards the back of the key. Be prepared to learn how to play just for this keyboard. Akai should really rethink this - much less spring and longer keys.
Those two reviews also complained about the pads not working well. But I find that they work just fine as long as the sensitivity and sensitivity curve are adjusted properly - I use 14 w/curve A.
Considering I had to return the first keyboard - Akai has some quality issues.
Finally, one annoying firmware bug - a bank value of 127 for the MSB in a program change is excluded only if you try to assign it to a key. Why? For me it is a pain since all my drum kits use MSB=127.

The MPK61 is a keyboard performance MIDI controller that expands the popular MPK line. Each MPK controller combines a piano-style keybed with a bank of genuine Akai Professional MPC pads, assignable Q-Link controllers and key technologies from the iconic MPC family of music production workstations. Producers, performers and DJs will appreciate the MPK61's mix of 61 semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, 16 MPC pads with velocity and pressure sensitivity, 72 assignable Q-Link controllers, MPC Note Repeat, MPC Swing and an arpeggiator. The MPK61's size is ideal for performers who need a larger keyboard than the original 49-key MPK49 offers, but also prefer the lighter weight and associated portability of a semi-weighted keyboard. The MPK61 retains the key split features from the MPK88, enabling you to divide the keyboard into two zones for performing with two different programs at once.Like its 25, 49 and fully weighted 88-key siblings – the MPK25, MPK49 and MPK88, respectively – the MPK61 empowers you to create and manipulate melodic, harmonic and rhythmic content and inspires creative production with its arpeggiator, MPC Swing and MPC Note Repeat technologies. The MPK61 comes with Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition software, one of the most popular and powerful performance and production programs worldwide. Ableton Live Lite enables musicians to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise and edit musical ideas in a seamless audio/MIDI environment. The MPK61 is a MIDI controller that sends MIDI data over USB for plug-and-play performance with Mac and PC. Because they are MIDI compliant, the MPK series works with virtually all MIDI recording, sequencing, and performance software for musical performers from keyboard players to producers to DJs and VJs.

Casio CTK720 Music Keyboard Review

Casio CTK720 Music Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this Casio portable keyboard to replace a Yamaha instrument that had apparently gotten fried inside from having used the wrong AC power adapter. Not to mention that my very old Casio MT240 has either mysteriously disappeared from my house, or, more likely, has been stashed away so well that I can't find it. After searching for the missing keyboard for several weeks without any luck, I decided that I needed to buy another keyboard, since it bothered me that I had no portable instrument to take to picnics, nursing homes, Christmas gatherings, and otherwise perform on the go.
The Casio CTK720 is a very basic keyboard, primarily designed for a beginner. However, there are plenty of features to satisfy the intermediate player and the keyboard hobbyist, such as myself. It has 61 full-size keys; 32-note polyphony; auto-accompaniment, in which the player may play a chord with one finger, or use the "fingered" mode, where one must hold down all the keys in a chord in order to get any sound from the left-hand side of the keyboard.
There are many styles and voices from which to choose when playing this instrument. Plus, there is a three-step teaching system to aid the beginner keyboardist. To add to the fun, there is a microphone jack so one can sing along while playing or listening to the built-in songs on this keyboard. In total, there are 100 songs in this instrument, divided into two banks: a piano bank, with traditional piano songs; and a song bank, with fully orchestrated songs. There is a jack to accommodate an AC power adapter. It would probably be wise to purchase the Casio AD5R Adapter and only use 6 AA batteries when playing this instrument outdoors or in a place where there may not be an available electrical outlet. I've been able to use my original Casio AD5 Adapter, which had been used with my MT240 and other small Casio instruments that I had bought, sold, traded, or just plain given away, through the years.
The Casio CTK720 has an earphone jack for private playing, and a jack to accommodate a sustain pedal, if a person should choose to use one. In my opinion, a sustain pedal definitely improves the sound when playing a portable keyboard. The playing isn't so choppy.
One of the things that appealed to me about this keyboard is that there are dedicated sliding switches to adjust the volume levels for the master, microphone, and auto-accompaniment volumes. This is reminiscent of the older Casio instruments. There is also a USB port to connect the CTK720 to a PC to download styles and other files from the Casio Web site. I haven't really done anything with that.
This keyboard does not have touch sensitivity. The piano and other voices are adequate enough, but they certainly don't compete with the more expensive instruments that I own. However, it beats my cheesy late-eighties Casio hands down, pardon the pun. If you want to improve the sound, hook the CTK720 to a small keyboard amp. I have a Crate KX15. The amplifier's 3-band equalizer and the 15 watts of power, compared to the 4 watts in this Casio, will make a big difference.
If you seriously want to study music, this is not the keyboard to buy. I bought it for pure fun, portability and ease of use; and also because it was a clearance item from another online store. I was able to get free shipping because I also purchased a gig bag in order to transport this instrument. The keyboard was only $79.00 and the gig bag was $29.99. A great price for a piano in a bag, wouldn't you say?
In summary, I wouldn't pay more than $100.00 for this keyboard. There are a lot of rhythms that I wouldn't even use. Though there are many voices, the organs and synths are pretty weak. The overall sound quality is certainly listenable, but nothing to write home about. It is simply a good basic keyboard for the budgetk-conscious person. A fun piano one can put in a bag.

I use 2 of these overhead for recording my drum set, they sound great and capture my crash, hihat and ride cymbals perfectly. I haven't used the batteries to power it, only phantom power on a cheapo samson mixer and it always works fine. Ive had 2 of these for about a year now with no faults.
